AB AIM: To enhance awareness on AIDS through unconventional methods of folk
media in a fair setting OBJECTIVES: 1. To organise a Health fair to
provide AIDS education in an atmosphere of fun and frolic. 2. To enable
people to shed their inhibitions on sexuality and thereby easily learn
about AIDS and HIV. METHODOLOGY: An eight days long Health Mela (Fair)
was organised in Dec. 92 with the purpose to disseminate health
education through the potent vehicle of infortainment. Apart from all
aspects of health, the focus of the fair was on HIV and AIDS. Several
innovative strategies-culturally acceptable means like puppet shows,
games, merry gorounds, animal rides, street plays, pantomines, magic
shows, juggler tricks, folk dances etc. were used to spread AIDS
messages & safer sex. Quiz programmes, an unmanned stall with free
condoms, were put up. Exhibitions Poster competitions on AIDS were also
organised. A live cariacture Mr. Condom spread messages on correct usage
of condom. RESULTS: The fair was an unqualified success 600,000 to
700,000 people attended 2.4 million condoms were picked by the people.
About 12,000 people came to seek specific information on AIDS from the
health functionaries at the fair. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Adopting
the theme of having fun while learning about health or more specifically
AIDS, in any intervention programme, enjoys a mass appeal. The idea of
the fair proved to be very cost effective. This approach has a rich
scope of replication in other developing countries where conservatism
places hindrances in free and fair discussions on AIDS.
